(All of the above quotes link to an article about George Carlin or a transcript of one of his monologues. Particularly good, I think, is the Rolling Stone magazine article and interview from 1972 which is linked to from the fourth quote -- "I think it's the duty..." -- and a transcript of his famous monologue, "Filthy Words," better known as "Seven Dirty Words," which the FCC took all the way to the Supreme Court, which is linked to from the sixth quote, "By and large...")

I was saddened to learn of his death. Such an interesting voice. Thanks for posting this, Sara.

A voice of down-to-earth sanity in crazy times. He'll be sadly missed.

hey all, thanks so much for your comments. i still get kind of sad when i think about the fact that he's really not around anymore. thankfully, he was prolific and left so much brilliant work to watch and read.

and oh, i don't know if it's recognizeable or not, but each quote is also a link to an article, or some such thing, about him that i found interesting. there's an old interview with him in the rolling stone magazine website archives, for example, and a summary of the supreme court ruling about his "words you can't say on tv" case, among other links.
